Comparison between Lamb to the Slaughter and The Way up to heaven.

Both stories deal with the idea of "the perfect crime" committed by a woman. But whereas Mrs Maloney's act of striking her husband dead is not premeditated, the twinkle-eyed middle-aged landlady had done same thing twice before and is "at it" again. She is definitely lost her mind whereas Mrs Maloney just seems to have momentarily lost control. However, Mrs Maloney giggles while the policemen are discussing the eventual murder weapon "right under their noses,"revealing the perverse side to her personality. She also keeps her cool directly after the murder, going to the store and getting things for supper, even a desert, "to please" Patrick (and to offer herself an alibi). Her deliberation and calculation are somehow incoherent with her sentimental and romantic nature. This paradox adds to the complexity and "scariness" of the character.

  1. I do not know what to comment . Your post is quite short. I love your blog layout though.

  2. To add on what you said, Mrs Maloney was quick to think of the consequences instead of helping out her husband by calling the ambulance. While Mrs Foster knew his husband was about to die but was cruel to let him die.

  3. I do not think that Mrs Maloney had lost her mind. She is just impacted by the news she was told that she killed her husband on the spur of the moment. But I agree that her character is indeed scary and experienced a drastic change.

  4. I think she was just shocked and just decided Patrick was an undeserving man. She was deliberately letting Patrick die.
For Mrs Foster, she sees that Mr Foster brings only more inconvenience.
